HUMANE SOCIETY STREAM RESTORATION
HUMANE SOCIETY OF INDIANAPOLIS
FLR was hired as design build contractor to design, permit, and construct a stream restoration project on Payne branch of Crooked Creek in Indianapolis, Indiana. The stream is an important tributary of the White River that provides surface drainage for nearby Michigan Avenue, The Indianapolis Humane Society and a neighborhood located to the north of the site. The project was funded by Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources and the land was donated by The Indianapolis Humane Society.

The stream was suffering from extreme bank erosion and unstable channel conditions. Left unchecked, adjacent landowners were in danger of losing critical infrastructure as the result of ongoing bank erosion.

To restore the eroded banks, FLR implemented the natural channel design methodology. The channel was able to transport sediment efficiently, therefore a bankfull cross section was not constructed. However, j-hooks, cross vanes, constructed riffles, and vegetated geolifts were strategically placed to counteract the bank erosion problems. The structures were built using on site and local materials such as root wads, boulders and tree trimmings.

Riffles were utilized to dissipated stream energy. J-hooks were strategically placed to dissipate stream energy, protect stream banks, and create pool habitat downstream of the structure. Vegetated geolifts were utilized to create a live hardened bank that would deter future bank erosion. Cross vanes were installed to center stream flow, protect stream banks, and dissipate stream energy. All structures were built with locally sourced material as well as material utilized from on-site.
