YORKTOWN NLT TRAILS
Yorktown, IN
The Yorktown Next Level Trails project provides safe and continuous pedestrian access that bridges key gaps in the trail network while enhancing recreational opportunities, supporting school connectivity, and linking the community to broader regional destinations.
2023-2026
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Yorktown Next Level Trails project consists of two trails, the first of which runs along River Rd from The Players Club at Woodland Trails to the Woodland Trails entrance where it connects to pre-existing pedestrian flow. The second trail involved in this project follows Tiger Drive south from Yorktown High School to meet with an existing walkway. These two project sites currently offer no pedestrian access and prevent the safe, continuous flow of pedestrian circulation in and around Yorktown. These two major gaps pose concerns for both recreational trail users including students, staff, and visitors of Yorktown. Currently, pedestrians between Yorktown Middle and High School are forced into roadways as their only option for access between two highly frequented areas.
Flatland Resources was hired by the Town of Yorktown to apply for a grant from the Department of Natural Resources’ Next Level Trails program. This grant was awarded to the Town of Yorktown in 2019 and allowed plans for safer passage to move forward. Since receiving the grant, Flatland has provided detailed trail designs that prioritize user safety, accessibility, and seamless integration with existing trails. In addition to grant writing and design, Flatland has coordinated with local utilities and stakeholders to ensure the project blends seamlessly into the fabric of both the landscape and the community.

Flatland Resources secured grant funding, developed the trail design, and coordinated with stakeholders to deliver safe, connected pedestrian infrastructure for the Yorktown Next Level Trails project.

By closing the gaps from Woodland Trace to The Players Club and providing access along Tiger Drive near the high school, the project ensures a safe, continuous corridor for walking, biking, and recreational use within Yorktown and beyond. By closing this gap, these trails now seamlessly connect the community to Muncie and the broader region’s amenities. Completion of this trail creates a 10-mile river trail that connects Yorktown to Muncie to the Cardinal Greenway, a critical part of the county-wide bike/pedestrian plan.
